On November 26, 2015, HGU unveiled the ‘Foundation for Nurturing Talents, Converged with Sustainable Energy and the Environment in Gyeongbuk Province and the East Sea.’ They hosted ‘The 1st International Conference on Energy and Environment under the theme of ’Nuclear Safety’.
Gyeongbuk Province and the East Sea are focused on nuclear energy production. This is the foundation of the Energy Cluster Project. Various issues are addressed such as attraction and construction of nuclear related facilities. The operation and management issues of conventional facilities are also addressed.
Recently, in Gyeongju, low and intermediate level radioactive waste disposal facilities were constructed. A new nuclear power plant was attracting attention in Youngduk country. Citizens are having vague anxiety and inhospitability regarding nuclear power development due to the radiation damage after the Fukushima nuclear accident.
The Head of the Foundation, Professor Jaeyoung Lee mentioned that “We had a venue to share nuclear safety issues with converged perspectives in the fields of technology, law, and policy. More specifically, this opportunity offered a chance to consider ‘safety’ and preemptive measures in case of a nuclear accident. Discussions focused on resolving public conflict centered around nuclear safety. I look forward to your interest in this conference.”
Starting with welcome remarks by President Soon Heung Chang, there were presentations, discussions, and a questions and answer session by Prof. Jaeyoung Lee and the former Minister of the Environment. In the first session, ‘Nuclear Energy and Safety Rights’ were presented. In the second session, ‘Risk Management in the Nuclear Energy Field’ was the topic. In the third session, ‘Nuclear Safety and Technology: Processing and Disposal of Nuclear Power Waste’ was discussed. In the fourth session, ‘Public Conflict Management in the Nuclear Energy Field’ was the focus. Finally, Professor Sangmin Jeon closed the event with his remarks.
