Undergraduates of HGU Published A Paper in the Science Citation Index (SCI)

On November 23, 2015, Handong Global University unveiled that students of the School of Mechanical Control Engineering published their paper in the Science Citation Index (SCI). They are the first co-authors to accomplish this feat.
Under the leadership of their corresponding professor, Professor Younggun Kim, Byumchurl Shin and Jungwhan Yoon wrote a paper on the design of a vibration absorber by using magnetorheological fluids in the Review of Scientific Instruments last October, 2015.
This research developed a vibration absorber by producing a smart material made from a red algae extraction. Depending on the strength of the magnetic field, it is applicable to all the fields such as robots, automobiles, drones, etc. It is estimated that its industrial value is very huge since this can be used in so many different fields.
These two students have been doing active research activities even though they are undergraduates. They delivered their presentation at the Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics International Academic Conference, which was held in Busan this year.
Byumchurl Shin said, “I had a chance to experience various activities at the undergraduate level including a presentation at a domestic and an international academic conference as well as publication in an international journal. I now have a strong confidence that whatever I do, I can manage everything with God’s guidance.”
Jungwhan Yoon mentioned, “I could perform research by applying my knowledge and academic background from my major courses. My deepest thanks go to the Foundation of LINC for supporting our research activities.”
Prof. Younggun Kim said, “This can be used as a small vibration control device using smart material. It can be applied in various industrial fields such as vibration nodules for planes and drones. They are undergraduate students, and they achieved good results because they performed their research with passion.”
This research was implemented as part of the ‘Converged Research Program for Undergraduate Students’ by the ‘Foundation for Nurturing Talents, Converged with Sustainable Energy and the Environment in Gyeongbuk Province and the East Sea’.
HGU was designated as a ‘Foundation for Nurturing Talents, Converged with Sustainable Energy and the Environment in Gyeongbuk Province and the East Sea.’ This was promoted by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea. In LINC projects, research models centered around undergraduate students were established and ‘Research-Supportive Projects for Undergraduateschool Students’ were implemented by establishing an undergraduate student centers research model.
