Mr. Jiyoon Shin, from the School of International Studies, Languages & Literature, received the Talent Award of Korea which was hosted by the Ministry of Education and organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity on November 27, 2015. The Talent Award of Korea 2015 is a prize given to Korean talents who achieved remarkable results using their talents or interests or shared their talents with 100 other people including 50 highschoolers, 50 graduates and adults.
Mr. Jiyoon Shin has been interested in regional studies since he was a highschool student. He received a prize at the National Geographic Olympiad Competition. At HGU, he has led the research team for the Middle East under the International Regional Research Institute of HGU. This has led him to visit areas of Syria twice for research and he continuously has been involved in volunteer work in Syria.
Another one of his efforts was to suggest the social enterprise model for alleviating poverty in Rwanda. Since 2012 he has worked with an alumni of HGU with the spirit 'Why don't you share what you have learned.' He also raised the issue of social enterprise to the international development sector. A bakery cafe and social enterprise named “Rzmanna” was co-established by students from HGU. They received the grand prize in customer service from the government of Rwanda within six months. The bakery is one of the recognized stores in the East Africa region.
According to Prof. Myungsul Doh, the guiding professor for Mr. Shin, "Mr. Jiyoon Shin is worthy of this award. He has a dynamic spirit that rises to meet a challenge without fear of failure. He always demonstrates academic professionalism as well."
Mr. Shin mentioned that "I practiced HGU's sprit and slogan 'Why don't you share what you have learned.’ God blessed me with this prize. I want to be a regional business expert that creates bridges between Korea and Africa in the future."
