All Handong students enter the university with undeclared majors and no affiliation to any department. All students begin as part of the Global Leadership School (GLS). During the 1st year (freshman year), students are educated at the Global Leadership School in foreign languages, IT subjects, and basic humanities and the basic sciences in order to meet the demands of this era of globalization and information.
All students that are a part of the Global Leadership School must take Practical English courses, Practical Computer courses and pass a course in either Sino-Korean or Chinese. Furthermore, the students train in foundational studies such as the humanities, social sciences, history, and mathematics and also study Christian beliefs and worldview, character-building and leadership, major foundation courses, and foreign languages.
During this year of general education, each student is preparing a foundation to become confident leaders in the global society of tomorrow while also taking time to find out which major will suit them best. Once the Global Leadership School is over, students in the first semester of their second year (sophomore year) choose their majors without any restrictions based on grades or department quotas.
